The Centre for eResearch offers a range of digital research skills workshops and training opportunities. Some of these are held on a regular basis, while others are available on request. For more information please browse the overviews below or contact us directly.

For more general IT skills topics, the University provides many courses to help researchers learn to use office productivity tools (e.g. Microsoft Office suite, SPSS or Adobe suite).

 

Research Data Management workshops

The Centre for eResearch, in collaboration with Libraries & Learning Services, provides online workshops for researchers of all stages introducing best practices and services to support you in planning, managing, and publishing your research data. Managing research data workshops are framed around the research data lifecycle, and include special emphasis on enabling compliance with the University’s Research Data Management Policy. The workshop touches on related issues such as copyright, intellectual property, and Māori data sovereignty. Please see the Research Hub for more information and how to book a place.
 

Software Carpentry

Software Carpentry workshops are two-to-three day (in-person) or four-to-five half-day (online) hands-on training events designed for research students and researchers with no prior research computing experience. The workshop covers core research computing skills:

  • The Unix Shell and Bash

  • Version Control with Git

  • Plotting and Programming with Python

Data Carpentry

Data Carpentry workshops are two-to-three day (in-person) or four-to-five half-day (online) hands-on training events. The workshop teaches introductory skills to organise, clean, and analyse tabular data, and is designed for research students and researchers with no prior experience. Lessons include:

  • Data Organisation in Spreadsheets

  • Data Cleaning with OpenRefine

  • Data Analysis and Visualisation with R

Machine Learning Carpentry

Machine Learning Carpentry workshops are two-to-three day (in-person) or four-to-five half-day (online) hands-on training events. The workshop provides an introduction to machine learning using python designed for postgraduate research students and researchers with no prior machine learning experience. Lessons include:

  • Programming with Python
  • Introduction to machine learning with Scikit-Learn
  • Introduction to deep-learning

Research Bazaar

Research Bazaar Aotearoa is a national week-long online digital research skills festival designed to upskill and build connections across the Aotearoa research community. A variety of volunteers from Aotearoa’s research community teach 40+ workshops on topics ranging from data science and high performance computing, through to design, impact, and engagement. Registrations are open to anyone from the research community and attendance is free. Please see the Research Hub for more information and how to register.
